Exciting PowerPoint Alternatives for Improving In-booth Presentations

By Jennifer Barham

The Ford Model T. Apple pie. Pride and Prejudice. These are classics. Add to these Microsoft PowerPoint and the list is well-rounded.

PowerPoint changed the presentation game with its swanky slides and colorful graphs, images, and charts. It revolutionized convenience and efficiency because before that . . . well, we had flip charts. Shout out to the 80s!

Because of its popular explosion in almost every industry, PowerPoint had little competition at first. Given its ubiquitous presence in any academic, medical, business, or other setting, you might think it’s the best option for presentations. However, it might not be. Consider what you actually need in a presentation:

  • Are you a Mac user? (PP is clunky to download and start for Macs.)
  • Do you need collaborative features for your team?
  • Do you need online and offline capabilities for presenting?
  • Are you interested in animation and dynamic slides?
  • Would newer, fresher graphics and other assets help your presentation?
  • Do you just need something simple and easy to use and get started?

Take a look at some of these PowerPoint alternatives to see if they have more of what you’re looking for and less of what you’re not.

Maybe you’re new to the digital presentation game or you’re looking for something less time-consuming than creating your own slides. If so, Slidebean is a great option for you. With themed, ready-to-use templates and thousands of GIFs, images, and flat icons in the software, Slidebean has you up and running in no time and allows you to focus primarily on the content you want to present without worrying about designing the arrangement.

Another option for those just looking to create a quick, lovely presentation is Canva. The free (for the basic plan) and easy-to-use interface allows you to make gorgeous slides via a host of free images and design templates. You can upload your own photos, share to social media, fold in animation and music, and end up with an impressive visual with relatively little work and know-how.

Keynote is Apple’s answer to PowerPoint. Free for Mac users and compatible with PowerPoint, it’s ideal for Apple-loyalists who enjoy the intuitive sophistication of Apple products. Although it has no slide library, it’s super simple to make animations and interactive charts (even to add reflections and picture frames to graphics) with over 30 cinematic effects imbedded in the program and dozens of templates and designs to choose from. Keynote is 100% compatible with PowerPoint, so you can easily flow in any existing slides, and if your company uses the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, Keynote is even more intuitive and is almost a must-have.

If you’ve been using PowerPoint for a while, Visme will be a digital breath of fresh air. With ready-to-use templates, millions of images, thousands of icons, and hundreds of fonts, users can design captivating presentations, infographics, demos, and more. Additionally, you can add call-to-action buttons, quizzes, surveys, etc. right in to your content. HTML5-based, it runs on any browser, any device, and promotes team work online and offline – team members can “leave comments” or collaborate in real time. If Visme doesn’t have it, you probably don’t need it. As a matter of fact, that might be the only con: the wide variety of features.

If what you want in your slide show is for it to not look like a slide show, check out Prezi. Prezi allows you to create presentations with a nonlinear flow. It’s packed with loads of professional-looking slide templates, which are impressive and easy to use. A special feature of Prezi is its live interaction option, allowing users to interface in real time with the presentation. Prezi is especially attractive to neophytes because it makes it quick and easy to create a lively, stunning display.

While Powtoon is not for every presenter, it is beyond excellent for presentations with lots of animation and video that require you to display and explain dynamic concepts. Powtoon exemplifies visual marketing – from brand awareness to explainer videos. And since a majority of trade show marketing is visual, this platform might just be a solution to some of your challenges. One of their taglines is “Break through the noise with visual communications,” and the offerings on Powtoon – custom cartoons, whiteboard doodling, characters to match your branding, and all other things visually animate – give you the best shot at that.

With all of these (and many, many more!) choices for digital presentations in your booth, why not jazz up your booth presence by trying something new and relatively risk-free? You can give your exhibit a facelift and a new attitude all at once.

The classics are always going to be around, and they are good. For classics. But it’s good to get to know the new kid on the block, too. Let us know how it goes for you!
